Getting to know South Knoxville (SoKno)

South Knoxville’s calling card is the Urban Wilderness — more than a thousand acres of connected parks, nature areas and former quarries laced with roughly fifty miles of trail, all inside the city limits. Ijams Nature Center, Baker Creek Preserve’s mountain-bike trails and the Mead’s Quarry swimming and paddling area are the headliners, and the network keeps growing.

That outdoor identity has pulled a neighborhood district up with it: Sevier Avenue, just over the river from downtown, now carries breweries, restaurants and shops in a walkable strip serving the surrounding streets of bungalows and cottages. Downtown is minutes away across the Gay Street or Henley Street bridges, which makes SoKno one of the shortest outdoors-to-office commutes anywhere in the region.

Getting around

Chapman Highway is the main spine; the Gay Street/Henley bridges connect to downtown in minutes.
